Shorten the duration but increase the intensity of your workouts. This will help keep your calories burned up, without taking up as much time. Try some of these ideas:
- If you normally walk, try the elliptical cross trainer instead.
- If you like weight training, try a fast paced circuit training routine, moving quickly from machine to machine without resting.
- Pack a jump rope and use it for your cardio workout. Jumping rope burns about 110 calories per 100 pounds in just 15 minutes. Compare that with only 55 calories per 100 pounds for 15 minutes of brisk walking.
- If you usually run, give interval training a try. Run for five to 10 minutes at your normal starting pace to warm up. Then, sprint for 30 seconds, jog slowly or walk for 30 seconds. A general rule of thumb is that you will burn about 20% more calories doing interval training, than you would doing a low-intensity workout for the same amount of time. So, you can cut your workout time but still achieve the same results.
